Why are you passionate about working with independent hotels?
My grandfather grew up very poor. My grandmother (an excellent cook) opened an Italian deli when they had little money and it flourished. They reinvested their profits into hotels and restaurants that were very successful. They were the definition of independent hospitality owners.
My mother worked in restaurants, and my grandfather owned hotels and restaurants, so I’ve always been fascinated with travel and meeting interesting people from around the world.
I’ve traveled throughout the United States and around the world, and I always try to stay in boutique or independent properties. One of the more unique and fun places I’ve traveled is Serbia. I absolutely loved the history, people, food and wineries throughout the country.
I think I may have simply been born with a passion for the hospitality industry.
How can we develop a better understanding of independent hotels?
Many people think independent hotels are only B & B properties or economy stays, which isn’t true. Independent hotels range from B & Bs to large luxury properties and everything in between. You can find them in nearly every city you’re traveling to.
One of the most unique independent hotels I’ve heard of and would love to visit is the Levin Iglut Golden Crown in Finland. The rooms are glass igloos with views of the Northern Lights.
What are some travel experiences that have shaped your approach to the hospitality industry?
Once I stayed at an independent property in France and the owners had a house next to the property. One of my other passions is dogs; they owned a very fat Labrador Retriever, which we joked about. That exchange created a bond between the owners and me, their guest. I ended up having a meal with them during my stay, which created a unique and special experience I’ll never forget.
It is experiences like this that motivates me, as well as my team, to ensure these kinds of “wins” every day for our clients. When we can alleviate day-to-day supply chain and budgetary concerns for independent property owners, they can spend time ensuring their guests have a one-of-a-kind experience.
